Hi everyone, it’s Caroline! Today, I’m excited to share with you 10 simple techniques to help tame your guinea pigs and turn them from timid and scared into confident and friendly companions. Taming guinea pigs can sometimes be a bit misleading. Many people think that because they are popular pets and have been domesticated for a long time, taming them is easy. However, it actually takes time and effort, but trust me, it’s absolutely worth it when your guinea pigs become super friendly!
I’ve organized these techniques into two groups. The first five are for very scared guinea pigs, while the last five are for those that are starting to improve and will take food from you. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Talk to Them
The first step is simple and involves just your voice. Sit next to your guinea pig’s cage and talk to them. It doesn’t matter if they are hiding; just chat about your day, what’s on TV, or anything else. Spend about 5 to 10 minutes doing this. This helps your guinea pigs realize that your presence and voice are not a threat.
Step 2: Introduce Food
Next, chop up some tasty vegetables and place a few pieces outside their hiding spot. Sit by the cage and wait patiently. You can talk softly or just sit quietly. The goal is for your guinea pigs to feel comfortable enough to come out and take the food, even while you’re nearby.
Step 3: Hand Feeding
For the third technique, when you place food in the cage, keep your hand in there instead of pulling it away. Try to hold your hand out flat so it doesn’t seem threatening. As they get used to this, gradually move your hand closer until they are comfortable taking food directly from your palm. This is a big step in building trust!
Step 4: The Long Food Trick
If your guinea pigs are still hesitant, try using a long piece of food, like celery or lettuce. Hold one end of the food and offer it to them. As they nibble closer to you, they will associate you with providing food, which helps them feel safe. Gradually reduce the length of the food until they are taking smaller pieces directly from your hand.
Step 5: Start Petting
Once your guinea pigs are comfortable taking food from you, it’s time to start petting them. Begin by gently stroking them from their nose to the top of their head. Be aware that some guinea pigs may not enjoy being touched, while others, like Pedro, might love it! Pay attention to their reactions and respect their preferences.
Step 6: Handling and Transporting
When you’re ready to take your guinea pig out of the cage, use a soft cozy bed or cuddle sack to make it easier. Encourage them to go inside, then scoop up the whole thing to transport them safely. Spend about 5 to 10 minutes each day with them out of the cage, offering veggies to help them feel comfortable.
Step 7: Practice Picking Them Up
While they are in your lap, practice picking them up. Support their chest with one hand and their bottom with the other. If they wriggle, don’t worry; it just means they need more practice. Once you’re comfortable, try holding them without the cozy sack.
Step 8: Floor Time Fun
Set up a safe area for floor time where you can sit with your guinea pigs. This is a great opportunity for them to explore while you can hand-feed them. As they get more comfortable, they may even start to pop their paws on your legs, asking for food!
Step 9: Teach Tricks
If your guinea pigs are food-oriented, you can try teaching them simple tricks. For example, see if they will stand on their back legs for a treat. This helps them learn to trust you while getting a reward. You can also lead them in a circle with food, encouraging them to follow you.
Step 10: Recognize Bad Habits
Finally, keep an eye out for any bad habits your guinea pigs might develop. If you notice something concerning, try to work around it and find a compromise that keeps both you and your guinea pigs happy.
I hope these 10 steps help you build a strong bond with your guinea pigs! Remember, patience is key, and every guinea pig is different. Enjoy the journey of taming your furry friends!
